Edwardsville Wallop Jaambar 5-1 PDF Print E-mail

Edwardsville played with all the determination to show the seriousness of their championship contest as they went back to top the International League with a sound beating of Jaambar. The game, played in the 92 degrees heat of Sunday, August 10, was not without flarring tempers as most players keept complaining about both the officiation, and the roughness of their opponents.

However, Edwardsville gained the upper hand within five minutes when Badum easily converted after a beautiful one-two pass with Tunde. Edwardsville were back on the scoring sheet in 10 minutes when Mark beat the offside trap to outrun Jambaar defense and the keeper to make it 2-0. The goal made Edwardsville settle down and opened up the game through low-ball passes which turned up elusive to the mostly taller Jaambar lineup.

It was not surprising to see Tunde make it 3-0 in the 22nd minute as he scored in a similar manner to their second goal. Edwardsville missed a lot more chances as Affure and Koko failed to convert otherwise clear goal opportunities. Jaambar continued to play with a heart, and were rewarded just before halftime when Oniffe cleared the ball on the line, but the linesman indicated otherwise. The referee had no choice but award the controversial goal to bring the halftime score to 3-1.

Second half brought a couple of changes on either side with Frank coming in for Oniffe to join the defense of Roger, Nik and Tonnie. Paul and Henry replaced Reuben and Tunde in the midfield, while Sam and Tonde combined to form an all new attacking force. Midway through the second half, Tonde made a smart over-the-head kick to beat the advancing Jaambar goalie to make it 4-1. Badum was again on the scoring sheet with a low shot that Jammbar keeper did not even attempt to stop.

Three teams now all have 9 points after winning all their three home games, but losing two away. Edwardsville tops the chart with a superior goal aggregate, followed by Springfield. Jaambar who went unbeaten midway through the season have now lost two consecutive games and are on position three. St. Louis United still tail the table with their winningless campaign so far this year.
