It was a mix of fortunes over the weekend as Edwardsville beat Springfield 3-2 at home on Saturday July 25, only to see their luck overturned the following day as they succumbed to a same-margin defeat away at Jaambar. Saturday's game against Springfield was characterized by an almost 50-50 possession by either side, but Springfield hit the net first to make it 1-0 . Edwardsville composure beared fruit as they replied through Affuray to end the first half at 1-1. Edwardsville came on top with Roger scoring their second goal mid-way through the second half, but Springfield equalized a few moments later. Top scoring Koko again tilted the game to Edwardsville as his shot slipped through Springfield defence to make it 3-2.
Sunday's game at Jaambar had a defensive miscommunication that saw two
back passes intercepted for a very early goal. This de-stabilized
Edwardsville's usual short-pass game flow. Badu had two low shots
narrowly miss the target. The aerial balls were Edwardsville's biggest
problem as the taller Jaambar players easily dominated in the air. It
was not surprising to see Jaambar score again when their striker was
fouled in the penalty area, and the resulting penalty kick made the
game 2-0. Edwardsville tried to get back and at one point Koko
stretched the keeper to save a curve ball that was destined to the top
corner of the net for an abortive corner kick. The unlucky Edwardsville team again saw another defensive miscommunication on the left result in Jaambar taking advantage to score their third goal. Not to be outdone, Edwardsville again breathed life into the game when Koko scored their second game after a goal scramble. Time ran out as Edwardsville was aiming for their thrird goal to attempt tie the game. As of now Jaambar lead the table with three clean sheets while Edwardsville are second over third-placed Springfield on goal aggregate. St. Louis United who were on bye this weekend are bottom of the tablewith no point so far. |
