2009 12th Annual Springfield Tournament

Tournament Rules and Regulations                                        Tournament and Picnic Guide

Springfield International Soccer Club is proud to announce the 2009 12th Annual Springfield Soccer Tournament which takes place from 7:00am on September 19th 2009. At least 12 teams are expected to participate in the soccer tournament which will be conducted together with, and followed by various other festivities to make this an all-family event. Last year’s tournament champion, U of I Champaign Soccer Club B, returns and joins 11 other hand-picked, international soccer clubs from around the country for a one-day picnic and soccer competition

You cannot afford to miss this event which will be graced, among others, by ambassador George Weah, one of the greatest soccer players of all time, and African Footballer of the 20th Century. The venerable Nelson Mandela has once referred to ambassador Weah as the “African Pride.” He is the only soccer icon ever to be crowned European, African, and World Soccer Player of the Year in a single year.

Equally important, the invited teams come with exceptional playing ability, organizational quality and class to excite the fans and all invited guests - especially the legend - that the trip to Springfield would be worth their while.

The tournament promises an outstanding soccer exhibition that ambassador Weah, his entourage, your club along with all other guests, and the city of Springfield will favorably cherish for years to come. Springfield is excited and ready to once again bring friends together for another merry weekend of family fun mixed in with dazzling displays of soccer talent combined with an international style.

The tournament is a one-day Olympic style soccer format followed by an evening of partying, food and fun. A pre-tournament evening is planned for Friday, September 18, 2009 for guests arriving early.  There are hotel reservations throughout Springfield for those who stay the nights til Sunday September 20th. One day tournament ends in style as the trophy changes hands

The heavy rains on Saturday did not stop the much anticipated one day tournament at SIUE. With 4 teams in participation, the first game was delayed till 9:30 and the concurrent game started 15 minutes later as players drove through the rain to get to the venue.

The first game was between the 2009 International League champions Edwardsville All Starts (EAS) versus Edwardsville Alumni (EA). This game started on a high tempo with both sides making attempts at goal and weighing each other’s strengths. As a result of the pressure on EAS well composed defense, the captain sustained a minor twist on his ankle and while he was coming out, there was lapsed concentration that led to conceding a goal.

Edwardsville Wallop Jaambar 5-1

Edwardsville played with all the determination to show the seriousness of their championship contest as they went back to top the International League with a sound beating of Jaambar. The game, played in the 92 degrees heat of Sunday, August 10, was not without flarring tempers as most players keept complaining about both the officiation, and the roughness of their opponents.

However, Edwardsville gained the upper hand within five minutes when Badum easily converted after a beautiful one-two pass with Tunde. Edwardsville were back on the scoring sheet in 10 minutes when Mark beat the offside trap to outrun Jambaar defense and the keeper to make it 2-0. The goal made Edwardsville settle down and opened up the game through low-ball passes which turned up elusive to the mostly taller Jaambar lineup.
